Science Laboratory and Technology Research Department (SLTRD)

The Science Laboratory Technology Research Department (SLTRD) plays a vital role in supporting research and development across NBRRI by providing expertise in laboratory analysis and testing procedures.

Mandate of the Department

The BRD has the mandate to improve the quality of life of Nigerians in the area of affordable housing and increased empowerment through integrated R&D in building materials and technologies. Specifically, it is required to formulate and execute R&D in the following areas:

  • Exploring advanced materials and technologies: The SLTRD spearheads research into innovative construction materials with a focus on performance, sustainability, and local availability. This could involve exploring new composites, nanomaterials, or advanced concrete formulations.
  • Addressing industry challenges through research: The SLTRD identifies critical challenges faced by the construction and road sectors and conducts targeted research to develop solutions. This could involve research on climate change adaptation, disaster-resilient infrastructure, or sustainable waste management in construction projects.
  • Publishing research findings and technical reports: The SLTRD actively disseminates research findings through publications, conferences, and online platforms. This knowledge sharing fosters collaboration with academia, industry professionals, and researchers globally.
  • To House critical facilities that supports various R & D tasks in the field of building, road and engineering materials research.
  • To assist in product development and process technology evaluation for improved performance.
  • To design and develop scientific, mathematical and computer models/applications that support relevant R&D tasks in the Building and Road construction industry.
  • To assist in the installation, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs of R & D equipment.
  • To design and develop relevant equipment for various R&D tasks and to provide technical inputs in the purchase of new R&D equipment.
  • Developing testing protocols and standards: The SLTRD contributes to the development and implementation of national and international standards for material testing and structural evaluation. This promotes consistency and ensures quality across the construction industry.

Division and Sections

The Science Laboratory Technology Research Department (SLTRD) consists of the Laboratory Infrastructure Division and the Technology Research Division. This department is one of the key technical Departments of the Institute
