Road Research Department

The Road Research Department (RRD) plays a vital role in enhancing Nigeria's transportation infrastructure by conducting research and development activities related to roads and the broader transport sector.

Mandate of the Department

Road Research Department has the mandate to conduct integrated research and development activities into all the varied aspects of the road construction industry and transport sector of the economy. The Department further provides consultancy services on professional, technical and scientific activities relating to roads, transportation and road construction industry to the public and private sectors.

  • Research and development: The RRD actively explores and promotes innovative and cost-effective road construction materials like recycled asphalt and locally sourced aggregates. This research helps to optimize performance and durability while minimizing environmental impact.
  • Testing and evaluation: The RRD conducts rigorous testing of road construction materials like asphalt, bitumen, and aggregates. This ensures they meet national and international standards, guaranteeing optimal performance and long-lasting roads.
  • Developing design guidelines: The RRD contributes to the development and implementation of design guidelines for road construction and maintenance. These guidelines consider factors like traffic volume, climate, and local materials, leading to efficient and sustainable road networks.
  • Traffic management research: The RRD investigates traffic flow patterns and explores strategies for optimizing traffic management. This research contributes to reducing congestion, improving travel times, and enhancing overall road network efficiency.
  • Structural evaluation of pavements: The RRD assesses the structural integrity of existing roads to identify potential weaknesses and guide maintenance or rehabilitation efforts. This helps prevent road failures and disruptions to traffic flow.

Division and Sections

The Road Research Department (RRD) has two Research Divisions, which are of the Highway Division and Geotechnical/ Environment Division. This department is one of the key technical Departments of the Institute
